Do I have to be positive, when life isn’t always?

I love this question in energy creation.

Let’s clarify.

When you listen to people like Tony Robbins, Esther Hicks (Abraham), and other energy coaches, the predominant thought they try to pass on is that you should focus on the positive. You should try to speak positively, and think about what you want rather than what you don’t want. But WHY???

You may be thinking “Life sucks sometimes. That is just a reality. No one can be positive all of the time.” And you would be totally right. Many people try to get around that by writing positive affirmations and sticking them to their mirrors, then they repeat these phrases all day. But your body and brain know what you believe and what you don’t, so if you keep repeating something without actually believing it the result is usually very disappointing. It would be like walking out to your garden and repeating “There are no weeds, there are no weeds, there are no weeds” when there are clearly weeds in front of you. There is no way to overcome something that you know (or believe) isn’t true, regardless of how many times you repeat the words. In fact, that actually has the reverse effect because your brain starts fighting against it.

If that is the case, why are all those people telling you to do it? The short answer is they aren’t. They aren’t telling you to keep repeating something that you don’t believe to be true, and expect it to magically happen. The idea behind speaking and focusing on the positive comes from a completely different place. Nature, and the Universe, have no negation system. More simply, there is no such thing as “NO” in nature and energy work. Nature does not recognize a negative in any way. Neither does your brain.

Why is that important? Because the Universe, and your brain’s Reticular Activation System (RAS), always focus on whatever you are thinking about whether you think it is good or bad. The fact that you are putting energy into thinking about it means it is important to you, so it must be important.

The Reticular Activation System (RAS) is the part of your brain that starts looking for anything you are thinking about, and pointing more of it out to you. Have you ever noticed that if you are worried about your car breaking down, everywhere you go you see cars broken down on the side of the road?

I drive a white car. Anytime I rent a red car I see red cars everywhere. That is because that little bit of red on the hood of the car I am driving causes my brain to start finding similar things around me. This is exactly how your brain, Energy, and the Universe work. They only care about the subject you are thinking about. The thing that is in front of you right then. Since you are thinking about it, it must be important, so they say “OK, you are putting a lot of energy into this, I can show you more of that.” Take any negative thought and remove the “No” part of it, and you will understand exactly what your brain, and the Universe hear.

“I don’t want to be late.” Becomes “I want to be late.”

“I don’t want a blue one.” Becomes “I want a blue one.”

“I don’t want any debt.” Becomes “I want debt.”

This is why you are constantly being told to speak and think positively. It isn’t because you need to create some airy-fairy dream world and hope it happens. It is because the Universe, and your brain’s RAS, will start drawing your attention to everything similar to what you are thinking about.

Start focusing on the parts of your life that ARE working well. When you speak, make sure that your words are about the good around you, and what you DO want. By doing this, you will start noticing more of those things.

Along with noticing more of those kinds of things, you will also start noticing other things that are “good” and make you happy. You will start noticing that your commute becomes much easier. Your co-workers will change right before your eyes. Your health may even improve due to the reduction in stress in your life from being more happy and relaxed. When you focus on the positive your biological chemistry changes and pumps more endorphins and dopamine into your system. You actually get a chemically induced high.

Ready to try it?

Find something you are really upset about right now. Let’s call this the cloud surrounding your silver lining. Think about it. Really get into the feeling of it. Now, pretend that it is a movie set and you can pull yourself out of the movie and observe from a seat in the theater. Look at it from outside. What is good about it that you are not acknowledging? Is there something in it that you can see as a gift? From your seat in the theater, is it bigger in your head than it is in reality? Can you find anything positive about it? How about 3 things that are positive about it? I’m betting that if you take just five to ten minutes to try this exercise you will be able to find at least one good thing about it. Come on, you can do it!
